On the morning of 21st of September, 2016, the UN International Day of Peace, individuals from all walks of life will come together for a common purpose – to mindfully create silent and powerful intentions of peace and goodwill for all in our world.

The guided morning meditation to spoken commentary and sublime music will be supported by a team of experienced practitioners of meditation, from all sectors of the community, who will each light a candle for peace on behalf of us all and hold a meditative space on the stage.

The UN International Day of Peace is observed around the world on September 21st every year by the General Assembly of the United Nations, to the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. Millions around the world take part in observing this day.

This year’s theme – the Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace – highlights how ending poverty, protecting the planet and ensuring broadly shared prosperity all contribute to global harmony. When we all work together, we can make peace possible, starting with 24 hours of peace on September 21. " (Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary General, 13th June 2016)

Following it's successful launch in 2015, in 2016, we invite all who share a concern for world peace to join this event at Federation Square and proactively support this Day. We believe that there is power in the gathering – and that this kind of human connection holds limitless possibility, consistent with the following quote: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” (Margaret Mead)

The event will be closed by Lord Mayor Robert Doyle and Matt Jones (General Manager, Program & Events, Federation Square). We invite you as well as your friends and colleagues to wake up for peace and come together for this inspirational event at Federation Square.

Register here. Please note that this event will also be broadcast live on the main screen in Federation Square.

This event is presented by Calm in the City and Federation Square.

“I have used meditation for many years to keep myself grounded. I have also used meditation to find that inner peace. I have no doubt that meditation has helped me live in the moment and make choices that are not only beneficial to me but people around me” Adam Goodes, Former AFL player, dual Brownlow medalist and 2014 Australian of the Year

"Meditation is well proven to have an accumulative effect - both from personal experience and research studies. When like-minded people gather together to meditate, there is a synergistic effect that radiates the positive benefits beyond that of the group meditating. So… Calm in the City offers the opportunity to have a cumulative, positive effect on our wider community. What better way to spend a morning in September?" Dr Ian Gawler OAM, Author and meditator

"Imagine an event where luminaries from all faiths, as well as leaders from politics, business, academia, healthcare, and the media, come together with people from all walks of life in the wider community, with no other agenda other than to simply meditate on peace. The Wake Up for Peace event is a powerful demonstration of what happens when we put it all aside and unite for a common purpose - to cultivate peace and goodwill. The air is positively charged with a great sense of togetherness. It is truly extraordinary." Shannon Harvey, Director and Producer, The Connection Documentary

“Everything that our world needs - greater kindness, good health, social justice, safety, happiness - depends on our capacity to live in peace. And our capacity to live in peace depends entirely on us. Let each one of us find and sustain peace in our hearts so we can offer peace freely and abundantly to our world. No greater change is needed. Choosing peace benefits everyone, without exception. I love the beautiful, engaged work that 'Calm in the City' is doing. May it grow and blossom. May it in every way be blessed. May all our lives be blessed with true and lasting peace.” Reverend Dr Stephanie Dowrick, writer, interfaith leader, social commentator

“To create real transformation and peace in the world we need to develop more self-awareness, compassion and wisdom. Meditation develops all of these qualities. I believe the answer to global peace lies in the inner transformation of individuals who as a collective can influence positive change in the world. Meditation supports this movement towards a more conscious, peaceful world.” Dr Elise Bialylew Founder of Mindful in May and Mindful Life Project
