Dr Ruth Gawler MBBS, MGPPsych, Fellow of the Australian Society of Psychological Medicine.
Dr Gawler is a General Practitioner with a specialised interest in Mind-Body Medicine and Psychology. She is the President of the Meditation Association of Australia (MAA), a Medical Practitioner and Meditation Teacher at The Gawler Foundation Managing Director of Insight Health Services
She graduated from Sydney University in 1981, and spent two years as a RMO at Sydney Hospital before working in Kenya. From 1990-95 she worked at the Central Australian Aboriginal Congress and was Medical Director of the Family Planning Association of Central Australia from 1991-1997 and worked for most of this period as a GP in Alice Springs.
In 2000 Ruth moved to Victoria and married Dr Ian Gawler. In 2001 she completed a Masters in General Practice Psychiatry and became a Fellow of the Australian Society of Psychological Medicine while at the same time beginning work at The Gawler Foundation as a doctor and therapist in the residential programs. At the Gawler Foundation Ruth led and presented in the cancer retreats, multiple sclerosis programs, Health Practitioner retreats, conferences and meditation teacher’s trainings.
Ruth currently works with her husband leading meditation retreats and trainings, and integrative medicine cancer programs in Australia and New Zealand. She has studied extensively the meditation methods of Ian Gawler and she is recognised as an expert in Mind-Body medicine and the therapeutic application of meditation in the style of Dr Ainslie Meares. Mainly teaching Mindfulness-based Stillness Meditation and Hatha Yoga, she also teaches guided imagery and contemplative meditation. Ruth is a long term student of Tibetan Buddhism.
